Almora Tourism

Almora district comes under the Kumoun division of the state of Uttarakhand, India. Almora has its headquarters at Almora city. Almora surrounded by Pithoragarh district in east, Bageshwar district in north, Chamoli and Pauri districts of Garhwal division in west and Nainital district in south. Almora is popular for its heritage, cultural events, handicraft and wildlife.

Almora is a perfect place for tourism as various tourist destinations are lies here and thousands of tourists come here to explore the beauty of nature. Nanda Devi Temple, Bright End Corner (Brighton Corner), Ramkrishna Kutir, Kasaar Devi temple, Chitai, Lakhudiyar, Ranikhet, Chaubatia, Shitla Khet, Jalana, Banari Devi, Dwarahat, Manila, Katarmal, Jageshwar, Vridh Jageshwar and Mritola Ashram are some world famous places of Almora district.

History of Almora District

Almora is an ancient town and has the history since a long time. The Katyuri king Baichaldeo has donated a big part of the land to a Gujrati Brahmin named as Sri Chand Tiwari. In 1568 the Raja Kalyan Chand founded the centrally located place as Amlora town when the Chand kingdom was founded in Baramandal. That time Almora was called as Rajpur which can be seen a number of ancient copper plates of Chand’s Kingdom.

Till 1960 district Champawat and district Bageshwar was a part of Almora.

Fairs and Festivals

There are many fairs and festivals that take place every year in Almora district. Nanda Devi festival, Jageshwar Shrawan Mela, Dushara Festival Almora, Doonagiri Mela, Dwarahat Mela, Gananath Mela and Somnath Fair are some most important fairs that are celebrated every year in Almora.

How to Reach Almora?

By Air

Pantnagar at Nainital about 127 Kms is the nearest domestic airport. The airport is only opens for charted planes, helicopters and military planes.

Kathgodam is the nearest railway station about 90 Kms away from Almora district. The Kathgodam railway station is well connected with major railheads of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and many other parts of India.
